Read more: This well known Christian martyr was born in Solun (Salonika, Thessaloniki) in the beginning of the 4th century, in a senatorial family.
His parents brought him up with special attention in the Christian spirit. His father was Duke of Solun and after his death Demetrius took his place.

It is said that his leadership saved the town several times from invading barbarians. But, for his part in the Christian cause, Demetrius was stripped of his military rank by Emperor Maximilian and sentenced to death.

Together with St. George, St. Demetrius is the most celebrated military saint.

In an authentic way, freed from the boundaries of concepts and words, it teaches us the attitude we should take in spiritual life. The icon at the same time is a road that should be followed…The icon is a living testimony to the origin and the fullness of man’s participation in the Divine Life.

This particular icon depicts one of the most celebrated martyrs in whole Christianity, St. George.
Born to a Christian noble family in Palestine in the time of the Roman Empire Diocletian, St. George served as a soldier in the army. He was promoted to the rank of Tribunus and stationed as an imperial guard of the Emperor at Nicomedia.

But soon Emperor Diocletian issued an edict that every Christian soldier in the army should be arrested and every other soldier should offer a sacrifice to the Pagan gods. St. George openly objected and with the courage of his faith loudly renounced the Emperor’s edict, and in front of his fellow soldiers and Tribunes he claimed himself to be a Christian and declared his worship of Jesus Christ.

different sizes. The metal could be gold, silver, copper, iron, or other.
Produced with a fairly simple imprinting technique, medallions have been crafted
for centuries.

Medallions were a prominent part of art in ancient civilizations, in particular
Macedonia and Rome. Sculpted out of gold and silver with intricate detailing,
these medallions were often used in art pieces whose goal was to adorn the person that wears it.

The Macedonian women, even today, use decorative medallion necklaces as
part of the traditional costumes worn during traditional festivities.
The medallions worn during marriage celebrations were crafted of opulent materials such as
gold and silver, adding sparkle to the ritual. This tradition remains intact today.

from the two monastery churches.

No one knows the exact time of construction of the older church, St. Jovan Forerunner, and the establishment of the monastery. But, it is believed that the church
was built by the Macedonian Tsar Samuil in 1010-1011, just few years before the battle between his soldiers and the army of the Byzantine Tsar Vasilij II, ended with the
tragic blinding of Macedonian soldiers. After the battle, the blinded army, stayed for a while at the surrounding area of the church St. Jovan Forerunner to get some rest.
From then on that area is called Slepce (slep=blind).

The two wooden doors are of special value, made in shallow wood-carving technique, ornamented with different figures and enriched with metal decorations,
represented in a manner that is often encountered in manuscripts from the 15th-16th century
