Read more: This well known Christian martyr was born in Solun (Salonika, Thessaloniki) in the beginning of the 4th century, in a senatorial family.
His parents brought him up with special attention in the Christian spirit. His father was Duke of Solun and after his death Demetrius took his place.

 

It is said that his leadership saved the town several times from invading barbarians. But, for his part in the Christian cause, Demetrius was stripped of his military rank by Emperor Maximilian and sentenced to death.

 

Together with St. George, St. Demetrius is the most celebrated military saint.
