Head jewelry was made of various metals and its function was not only decorative and practical (to fasten a cap or a scarf), but also symbolic and protective. Most outstanding head jewelry (the so called ‘tepelak’) is round shaped, with more or less convex hood and richly ornamented with small chains, silver coins and fringes (decorations of various shapes – round, leaf-like, square, heart-shaped). Tepelaks were worn all over Macedonia, particularly in the regions of Kumanovo, Skopje, Gostivar, Gevgelija and by the Vlachs. This headgear went out of style in the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
