THE MOTHER OF GOD PELAGONITISA
The importance of their work is all the greater for the fact that it relied on traditions developed in the painting centres of Macedonia.
The Mother of God Pelagonitisa is shown in half-length. In her arms she is carrying the infant Christ. His back is towards the spectator. The loving pose is emphasized by Christ’s face touching the lips of the Mother of God. The Mother of God is dressed in dark red maphorion bordered with gold. The infant Christ is dressed in white decorated discreetly painted flowers of blue and vermilion. He has a blue belt hatched with gold round his waist. However, special life is given to the scene by the orange cloak, which wraps the right leg of Christ and is thrown over the left arm of the Mother of God.
The background is gold. The halo of the Mother of God is indicated by two lines impressed on the gold background. The inscription is written in vermilion.
