Golden mask on Macedonian banknote

First 4 funerary golden masks have been found in princedoms monumental graves near the village Trebenishte in the vicinity of Ohrid. Two of them found in 1918 year, have been appropriated by the Bulgaria Museum and two others found in 1934 by the Belgrade Museum. Time later in Heraclea Lyncestis (ancient city near Bitola, Macedonia) had been found fragments of funerary gold mask.
The last golden mask and a golden glove with a golden ring were discovered at the archeological locality Samoil Fortress in Ohrid on 30 September, 2002 year.
According to the other finds from the rich graves (bronze and silver jewelers, luxurious pottery and toreutic objects, weapons) they have been dated in the VI c. BC. According some archeologists they present the complex concept of believing in immortality, by the essence of covering the deceased’s body with skillfully, virtuously made golden sheet shaped like a face mask or cover for the other body parts (arms, legs). The artistic expression confirms the high civilization level of the ancient Macedonian culture, and the dilemma for the link with the younger Phoenician masks and the famous Mycenaean masks are challenge for the contemporary science.
